Busy Month

It’s been a while once again since I have posted. For a basketball coach, January is by far the busiest month of the year. The basketball team is now 18-7 overall and 10-4 in conference. We have to make a big run in these last three weeks if we want to make the national tournament. Our chance at winning the conference regular season was all but erased when we lost at Northwestern on Saturday. Still, we are having a good season with a really young team. I am 2-12 as a JV head coach. We have underachieved all year, which is disappointing to me. At least our Varsity is doing well though.

I have substitute taught five days so far. I was hoping to get 3-4 days in a week at Seward High School or Middle School, but it has only been 1 or 2 days. My best day was the first one where I subbed for the upper level Spanish teacher. She had me put in the movie National Treasure 2 with Spanish subtitles. It was a pretty easy day. Another day of note was when I subbed for the upper level PE teacher. My good friend, Ashley Smith, is his student teacher, so I got paid to watch her teach and hang out with her. That was a fun day!

Two weekends ago, we hosted the annual Concordia Invitational basketball Tournament (CIT) this year in Seward where four Concordia’s duke it out to see who has the best girls and guys teams. A few of my best friends that have graduated came back for the tourney along with my dad. So we had five people staying in my two person apartment for a week. It was a great time! Concordia-Nebraska took down the men and women’s championships to make it even more of a fun weekend. After I took my buddy David Jabs to the Omaha airport on that Sunday, I stopped by the Horseshoe casino and played for two hours. I played the 1-3 NL game and made $40 before leaving to get back for intramurals.

This last Saturday was the first day in weeks that I had time to play some online poker. Once again, the break from poker proved to be huge for me as I took 4th in a $3 rebuy on Cake for $300. I did my usual waiting until the first break to buy in and add-on, so I was only in for $6. I think my ROI on days where I have not played in at least the previous week are off the charts. The refreshing and focus of my brain is obviously extremely important for my poker game.

Yesterday, Sunday, I won my 5th intramural championship of the year as we took down the 5 on 5 coed basketball championship. Before that, two of my friends and I took down the 3 on 3 championship. Those two, along with mixed doubles, kickball, and flag football make up my five championships. 5 on 5 men’s basketball is under way and there are some teams with football players that will pose a huge threat to our team full of coaches.

Well that is my life during these last five weeks or so. I still don’t know what I am going to do next year. The clock is ticking though and I am starting to feel a little stressed.
